Local Developer Invests $200K in New Murals along 40 West ArtLine

Riverpoint Partners CEO Reid Davis and his partners at CentrePoint Properties announced plans to invest $200,000 in new murals at Lamar Station Apartments located along the 40 West ArtLine. This will be the largest mural project in the history of 40 West Arts District, Lakewood’s state-certified creative district along West Colfax Avenue.

Once Riverpoint and CentrePoint acquired the property in 2019, the group began working with West Colfax organizations on its vision to transform the 1960s-vintage apartment community into a compelling place to live and a vibrant art destination.

“We’ve been watching the West Colfax area evolve over the last decade. Because of the progress and potential here, we’ve made substantial investments in the corridor during the past two years,” said Davis, who lived in the Two Creeks neighborhood for three years, moving last year only after his family outgrew their house. “We want to breathe new life into this rental community and make it a joy to come home to for its residents. This significant investment in murals will benefit our residents as well as those who enjoy 40 West’s ArtLine.”

In addition to upgrades to each of the 138 units and a soon-to-be-announced new name, the apartment community located just south of W. Colfax on Lamar Street, we be the beneficiary of new murals on most (or all) of the nine buildings in the complex.

Following a Call for Muralists and a series of presentations and interviews, Riverpoint Partners and CentrePoint Properties selected muralist Katy Casper Gevargis—a Colorado artist well known in the metro area and with plenty of experience in the district.

“Katy was a great choice,” explained Kevin Yoshida, owner of IDEATE Design, who collaborated with the Davis and his team on the artist selection process. “Her previous work in the district gives her great context for our community and helped shape her artist vision for this project.”

In collaboration with the property owners, the artist will present her overall mural concept to the ArtLine Art Selection Committee, which is comprised of local community members and representatives from the City. Thereafter, the concept will be reviewed by Lakewood’s Public Art Commission. Once this process is complete, the final concept will be unveiled to the community—most likely at a WCCA meeting in February or March. Because of the scale of the project—multiple murals potentially on nine buildings—there’s talk of a streaming online initiative to share real-time progress once work begins in late May.

“We’re delighted to see this major investment in a large-scale mural project along the ArtLine—and that Riverpoint Partners and CentrePoint Properties recognizes the value of this public process. They have willingly agreed to go this route, even though the murals are 100% privately funded and completely on private property,” said Bill Marino a champion for 40 West Arts who heads up the local business improvement district. “We need even more visionary redevelopment of this nature in our community. Let’s all hope this catalytic investment starts a trend of private investment in the ArtLine!”
